Dr. Allen joined the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor in July 1991. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998 and to Professor in 2004. She is a licensed health service provider and works with children, adolescents, and adults.

Dr. Allen has co-authored six mental health education manuals for Kindergarten through Fifth Grades. One of these manuals, Dealing With Feelings, was added to the Promising Programs List by the Substance and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in 1998. These mental health education programs have been implemented in classrooms in the Oklahoma City Public Schools for the past 25 years.

Dr. Allen is the author of three coping and resilience manuals which have been published by the Terrorism and Disaster Center in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The first of these manuals, RCI-Child, is an enhancement of an interview implemented with 6500 children in classrooms in the Oklahoma City Public Schools following the bombing in Oklahoma City in 1995. RCI-Child has since been implemented with child and adolescent survivors of Hurrican Katrina and with children in a high-risk neighborhood in Shreveport, Louisiana with significant results. RCI-Child was added to SAMHSA’s Promising Programs List in 2011. Additional manuals are RCI-Family for use with families and RCI-Clinician for use in clinical settings.

Dr. Allen has been a full member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Oklahoma Psychological Association (OPA) since 1991. She has served on the Board of Directors of OPA in 1992 as Secretary of Health Service Providers.

As an educator and psychotherapist, Dr. Allen teaches and supervises Psychiatry and Psychology interns, residents, and fellows in the art of interviewing and evaluating children and their families. She leads seminars for trainees in the Department, focusing on play therapy techniques. She was awarded the Gordon Deckert Award for Sustained Excellence in Education in 2008.
